A Masonic Boomerang Box has been constructed by an
Australian Freemason who was born and raised in Canada. This Boomerang Box is intended as a means to
communicate Australian Masonic light to fellow Masonic Brethren in overseas
lodges and seeks to receive correspondence from those whom would normally be
outside of the reach of visitation.
Caloundra Lodge 387 resides in a
popular ocean-side town on the Sunshine Coast called Caloundra in Queensland, Australia.
During the 2013/2014 term, the Master of
the Caloundra Lodge 387 began handing out boomerangs to the Masters of Lodges
that he visited within the local district.
This was a way to promote return visitation from local lodges. The boomerangs are labeled with the Caloundra
Lodge and Destination Lodge names and a message asking for the boomerang to be
returned to Caloundra Lodge on their next visit. A simple gesture which has resulted in a bit
of Masonic fun.
The idea came from sitting at the market one day and
recognizing that a boomerang is essentially in the shape of our Masonic
Square. A boomerang, if thrown properly,
also comes back. This made a perfect
story to tell as a responder to toasts to visitors whilst visiting local lodges
and it worked. Before long we found our boomerangs returning to us. Simple,
easy and just plain fun.
Caloundra Lodge 387 watched the success of these Masonic
boomerangs and then began to expand the idea after looking up Lodges overseas and giving consideration of sending boomerangs to them too. Then the idea of the
Boomerang Box started to take shape. Why
just send a boomerang to one lodge overseas?
This was the point where a start was made on gathering materials and
Crafting what is now the Masonic Boomerang Box.
The Boomerang Box is an English oak box which includes
a greeting, a request for a photograph of the overseas lodge members holding
the Boomerang Box and a request to deliver the box forward to a new lodge that
has not yet received the box. A scroll
in the box is to be signed with the lodge name, location and date of each lodge
that receives the box as a record of its travels. The photograph and message from the recipient
lodge members is then requested to be emailed to Caloundra Lodge 387 so that a
record can be made of the latest message and the current location of the
Boomerang Box.
There is a documented account of the travels of the
Boomerang Box in the form of a google map. It includes the destinations that the box has
been to, the distances between each Lodge that it has travelled to, the name of
Lodges visited and pictures and notes of pertinent points of interest as is
suggested by the box. Go to the map link on this blog to see where the box is up to at
any time.
Caloundra Lodge 387 is eager to watch the expedition
unfold and to see what connections and fraternal bonds that are created by this
Boomerang Box. Records will be kept of
the correspondence that is generated from overseas by this initiative for
anyone to review whilst visiting Caloundra Lodge 387 and the above mentioned
map will be updated during any future correspondence from overseas too.
Additionally, there is a puzzle on the box which is
somewhat coded for those who are willing to look closer at what is
written/engraved on the box. Can you
solve the puzzle that is part of the Masonic Boomerang Box? The challenge is put to your lodges to see if
you can solve the puzzle. "A
quarter turn clockwise should get you started".
Good luck to the Masonic Boomerang Box on its travels and good luck to all lodges in solving the puzzle. Pictures of the Boomerang Box are below.
